SPICE is a browser for protein sequences, structures and their annotations. It can display annotations for PDB, UniProt and Ensembl Peptides. All data is retrieved from different sites on the Internet, that make their annotations available using the DAS protocol. It is possible to add new annotations to SPICE, and to compare them with the already available information.

DAS, the distributed annotation system, provides a communication protocol to exchange biological annotations. It is based on the idea that annotations should not be provided by single centralized databases, but rather be spread over multiple sites. Data distribution, performed by DAS servers, is separated from the visualization, which is done by DAS clients.

SPICE is based on the "3D-DAS" extensions to the DAS protocol as defined at http://www.efamily.org.ac.uk/xml/das/documentation/. For the 3D visualization the Jmol applet is used.

SPICE can communicate with the DAS - registration server to retrieve a list of available DAS - sources.
